Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga: Which Sahara Dunes Should You Visit?

What's the Difference Between Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga?
They're Morocco's two major dune fields, and they're built for different trips despite both getting lumped together as "the Sahara." Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, is Morocco's most-visited dune field and the easier of the two to reach. Erg Chigaga, reached via Zagora and M'Hamid, is the country's largest erg and its more remote counterpart, requiring more time and a rougher approach. Both sit within the same Moroccan Sahara and offer the same core experience — camel trekking, a night in a Berber camp, and a clear-sky view of the stars — so the choice comes down to accessibility and crowd level rather than which one is more "authentic."
What Is Erg Chebbi Like?
Erg Chebbi sits at the end of a paved road, which is exactly why it's the dune field most Marrakech-, Fes-, and Ouarzazate-based itineraries reach, including most of ours. Its dunes rise to around 150 meters, among the tallest in Morocco, and the paved access means a shorter drive and a wider range of camp styles, from simple to luxury. The trade-off is popularity: Merzouga is a real town now, built up around desert tourism, so you'll share the dunes with more camps and more travelers than you would further south. That said, even a busy night in Erg Chebbi still delivers a genuinely dark sky and a real camel trek — the crowding is relative, not a dealbreaker.
What Is Erg Chigaga Like?
Erg Chigaga spans roughly 40 kilometers and is genuinely Morocco's largest dune field, with dunes reaching around 120 meters. The road runs out well before you arrive — the final stretch past M'Hamid requires a 4x4, which is precisely what keeps it quieter. The approach itself is part of the experience, crossing rocky hamada plains and the occasional nomad encampment before the dunes come into view. Fewer camps, fewer other travelers, and a stronger sense of remoteness are the reward for the longer, rougher approach it takes to get there, along with an even darker night sky than Erg Chebbi's, if that's possible.
Which Dune Field Should You Choose?
Choose Erg Chebbi if you have a week or less and want the classic Sahara experience without adding travel days — it's why most of our shorter desert tours route through Merzouga. Choose Erg Chigaga if you have more time and want the dunes to feel genuinely far from anywhere; it's the dune field our 5-Day Tour from Agadir to Marrakech is built around. Neither is objectively better — they're different trips, and telling us how much time you have and how remote you want to feel is enough for us to point you to the right one. Both can also be paired with the same imperial-city and kasbah stops on the way there, so switching dune fields doesn't mean rebuilding the rest of the itinerary from scratch.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Which is bigger, Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga?
- Erg Chigaga is Morocco's largest dune field, spanning around 40 kilometers, versus Erg Chebbi's smaller but still substantial footprint near Merzouga.
- Do I need a 4x4 to visit Erg Chigaga?
- Yes — the road toward M'Hamid is paved, but the final approach to Erg Chigaga's dunes requires an off-road vehicle, which is part of why it stays quieter than Erg Chebbi.
- Can I visit both dune fields on one trip?
- It's possible but adds significant driving time since they're several hours apart — most travelers pick one based on how much time and how much remoteness they want, rather than combining both.
